British physicist Cyril Hilsum, whose work helped make flat-panel displays possible, has died at the age of 101, The New York Times reports. In the late 1960s he led a team at the Royal Radar Establishment that developed stable liquid-crystal materials, turning an emerging science into screens that could replace bulky cathode-ray tubes. The technology first served radar and small devices such as calculators and watches, and later became the basis for the flat screens in televisions, laptops and smartphones. Hilsum died on 23 September 2026 in London.

The sarcophagus itself dates to the Roman period, around the fourth century, and carries an inscription for Valerius Amandinus, but a later Anglo-Saxon style cross carved on its lid raised doubts about who was inside. A new analysis suggests the occupant was likely a medieval monk or abbot of Westminster, buried centuries later in a reused coffin. Researchers also found traces of a rotted wooden coffin filled with lime, a practice then usually reserved for high-status burials.

London police arrested 139 people at a protest outside the US Embassy in support of Palestine Action, a group banned in Britain. Police said most of those detained were arrested for expressing support for a proscribed organisation, and more arrests were expected. Support is growing for the idea of holding the Olympic and Paralympic Games in northern England in the 2040s. A £7 million fund for a full feasibility study into a possible bid for a 'Northern Games' was allocated in the Chancellor's first Budget. The Labour MP for Warrington South, Sarah Hall, said she absolutely backed spending the money on the plan, recalling how fantastic London 2012 had been. A Reform UK deputy leader in Lancashire and a former Conservative council leader in Bolton also called the idea exciting and fabulous. The study will look at venues, transport, costs and legacy, and the idea was put forward by Northern Mayors with backing from former Olympians.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has called for a cap on the number of robotaxis on the capital's streets, as the UK government prepares to allow fully driverless cars to operate in London. Pakistan International Airlines has welcomed its first Boeing 787 Dreamliner, the first plane of its kind to join any Pakistani airline's fleet. The aircraft arrived in Islamabad from London as flight PK-786 and was welcomed by PIA chief executive Air Vice Marshal Amir Hayat. The 787-9, leased from Norse Atlantic Airways, seats 250 to 325 passengers and will fly long-haul routes, starting with Pakistan-United Kingdom services. PIA says the Dreamliner is part of its plan to modernise its fleet and expand its international network.

Toyota will manufacture Waymo robotaxis for Japan and the United Kingdom, turning an 18-month-old preliminary agreement into a production plan. Toyota will build 2027 bZ4X electric vehicles and fit Waymo's self-driving hardware at its Takaoka plant in Japan, handling the whole process under one roof, with testing and validation starting in Japan in 2027 and deployment in the UK and other markets to follow. The vehicles are designed for Level 4 driving, meaning they handle all driving tasks within a set area with no human driver needed, and they feature automatic doors, a power liftgate and extra rear legroom for passengers. Both Japan and the UK drive on the left, and Waymo's co-chief executive said the companies will start with right-hand-drive markets. No financial terms, vehicle numbers or UK launch date were disclosed, and Waymo is separately testing Jaguar I-Pace vehicles in London and Tokyo.

Shell reported a third-quarter net profit of $10.81 billion on Thursday, its highest since 2022 and well above the $10.33 billion analysts had expected. U2 have announced a UK and Europe stadium tour for 2027, their first headline concerts in the region since 2018, in support of their new album Carnaval de Luz, due on November 13. The Greatest Show On Earth World Tour begins at the Strawberry Arena in Sweden on April 26 and 28, then visits the Stade de France in Paris, the Estadio da Luz in Lisbon, the Johan Cruijff ArenA in Amsterdam, and closes the European leg at the San Siro in Milan in July. London's Tottenham Hotspur Stadium hosts the only UK dates, on June 18 and 19, with Wolf Alice as special guests for the UK and Ireland shows. No Irish dates have been announced yet, though the band says it plans to wrap up the tour in Ireland.

Deaths linked to wildfire smoke in Canada have risen sharply over the past two decades, with a new report in The Lancet estimating about 4,000 deaths a year in the four years to 2025, compared with about 1,050 a year between 2003 and 2012. Co-author Ian Hamilton, a planetary health researcher at Imperial College London, said that on average across the population more deaths are seen during periods of wildfire smoke exposure, even though smoke cannot always be named as the trigger for any one person. The report found about 80 percent of the hot days studied were linked to fossil-fuel-driven climate change, and health experts warned that extreme heat combined with smoke is especially dangerous for young people and athletes who push through exhaustion.

London-based mining private equity firm Appian Capital Advisory plans to deploy $5-7 billion globally over the next 12 to 24 months, with about $2 billion of it in Africa, chief executive Michael Scherb told Reuters. But policy uncertainty is pushing investment toward Latin America, he said, as African governments tighten control over mining, raise royalties and demand bigger local shares. Appian, which invests in gold, copper, zinc and rare earths, sees Morocco, Namibia and Botswana as top-tier jurisdictions and is looking at Ghana, Ivory Coast, Mauritania and Senegal. Two men appeared in a London court on Tuesday charged under Britain's National Security Act after last month's security incident at RAF Fairford, a base previously used by US bombers for strikes on Iran. Mohmed Abdulkarim, 24, is charged with conduct likely to materially assist a foreign intelligence service between 31 August and 28 September, while Nouman Essghir, 24, a dual British-Iranian national, is charged with entering a prohibited place on 22 August. Prosecutors said five men drove three vans to the base on 27 September with drums of petrol, after one was told there was a bomb in a van and called 999. Abdulkarim was granted bail and Essghir was remanded in custody; six other people arrested at the base remain on police bail.
