Unannounced 'sunlight service' space test surprises astronomers

Unannounced 'sunlight service' space test surprises astronomers

Key points

  • Astronomers were surprised by an unannounced test by Reflect Orbital, a start-up planning sunlight as a service from mirrors in space.
  • On 10 October in California, the company used powerful spotlights to simulate the beam its future satellites would send down at night.
  • Astronomers say they were not told in advance, and they worry about the effect on night skies and scientific observation.
