Tens of thousands join Congress-led protest in Delhi over voter lists

Tens of thousands of people joined a protest led by India’s opposition Congress party in New Delhi on Sunday, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over a nationwide revision of voter lists. Led by Rahul Gandhi, protesters marched from central Delhi to Ramlila Maidan, chanting against alleged vote theft and saying they would not accept the removals. Opposition parties say more than 133 million names have been removed from electoral lists, while the protest also targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The revision has sparked political disputes and street protests across India for more than a month.

Thousands join Indian opposition protest demanding poll chief's resignation

Thousands of opposition protesters marched in Delhi on Sunday, demanding the resignation of India's Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over a voter-list revision that opposition parties say has removed more than 130 million names. Led by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, the march to Ramlila Maidan was the latest in more than a month of protests against the revision. The Election Commission says the exercise is needed to remove duplicate and ineligible voters, and denies favouring any party.

Indian forces have tightened security in Delhi ahead of a large opposition protest. Extra personnel and checks have been put in place in the capital as authorities prepare for big crowds. The measures are aimed at keeping order during the demonstration.
