A federal judge in California has rejected the US Justice Department's bid to set aside the ballots of more than 20,000 voters whose citizenship it questioned, calling the move brazen pre-election interference. Judge David O. Carter said voters registered under California law must not lose their core right on the basis of unfounded allegations from a procedure rife with uncertainty and errors. The department had earlier claimed 190,000 ineligible voters on the state's rolls before revising the figure to 20,000, and it filed its emergency lawsuit about ten days ago, after early voting had begun. The Justice Department is expected to appeal the ruling ahead of the November 3 midterm elections.
