German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Europe and Asia should work more closely on trade and security, arguing that both regions face pressure from big powers, above all China. Speaking in Singapore before travelling to Japan and South Korea, he said the two regions' security is directly linked, and called for a coordinated response to unfair trade. He also said China carries a special responsibility for peace and order in the Indo-Pacific, and that Europe is preparing tougher trade tools, including safeguards on imports such as chemicals, furniture and machinery.
