  • A new study says one extra year of school in the 1970s may have lowered dementia risk decades later.
  • Researchers studied Britain's 1972 law that raised the minimum school-leaving age from 15 to 16 in England, Scotland and Wales.
  • Children born on or after 1 September 1957 had to stay in school longer, while those born just before could leave at 15, creating a natural comparison.

A new study says one extra year of school in the 1970s may have lowered dementia risk decades later. Researchers studied Britain's 1972 law that raised the minimum school-leaving age from 15 to 16 in England, Scotland and Wales. Children born on or after 1 September 1957 had to stay in school longer, while those born just before could leave at 15, creating a natural comparison. Using UK Biobank data up to age 65, the team found a sharp fall in Alzheimer's disease and related dementia diagnoses among those who stayed longer, even among people with a high genetic risk. Published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, it is described as the first evidence of a causal link between extra schooling and lower diagnosed dementia.
