Key points

  • Colombia's president has ordered a temporary military deployment in Cucuta, a city on the border with Venezuela, after a wave of violence blamed on criminal groups.
  • A mayoral candidate was murdered in recent days and a bombing injured four police officers, according to local authorities.
  • The president said the deployment will last only until public order is restored.

Colombia's president has ordered a temporary military deployment in Cucuta, a city on the border with Venezuela, after a wave of violence blamed on criminal groups. A mayoral candidate was murdered in recent days and a bombing injured four police officers, according to local authorities. The president said the deployment will last only until public order is restored. It is the second such move since he took office in August, after a similar deployment in the coastal city of Santa Marta in September. Armed groups involved in drug trafficking, illegal mining and smuggling operate along the long, porous border between the two countries.
