China, Switzerland hail upgraded trade deal giving Swiss unusually free access

Key points

  • Chinese President Xi Jinping and Swiss President Guy Parmelin have hailed an upgraded trade agreement between their countries, due to be signed on Friday, which will give Switzerland unusually free access to Chinese markets.
  • The deal runs against a broader global shift towards protectionism and contrasts with barriers put in place by the United States and the European Union.
  • Chinese and Swiss officials announced the agreement in August, a year after US President Donald Trump imposed the highest American tariffs on European exports on Switzerland.

The deal runs against a broader global shift towards protectionism and contrasts with barriers put in place by the United States and the European Union. Chinese and Swiss officials announced the agreement in August, a year after US President Donald Trump imposed the highest American tariffs on European exports on Switzerland. Parmelin said he hoped the two countries would hold their next strategic dialogue between foreign ministers later this year.
