American oil refineries have been running harder than usual in 2026 because tight global supplies of diesel have pushed their profits up. The energy agency said refineries used more than 95 percent of their capacity between May and September, the highest for those months since 1998. Diesel prices have hit record highs after a global shortage, and total output is still below the 2019 level because some refining capacity has closed since then.

The US Department of Homeland Security oversaw 980,000 deportations during the first 18 months of President Trump's second term, according to a think tank report. Elon Musk's public backing of a possible $3.5 trillion combination of SpaceX and Tesla has worried some people involved in the talks, who fear his comments could invite shareholder scrutiny and delay the process by weeks. Both companies have formed special committees to examine a deal, but discussions are still at an early stage. A merger of this size would be the largest corporate transaction in history.
