Pakistan plans to privatise three power distribution companies — Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO), Gujranwala Electric Power Company (GEPCO) and Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO) — in the first quarter of 2027, Privatisation Commission Chairman Muhammad Ali has said. Due diligence for the three companies is already under way, while potential investors have asked for more time to assess the complex deals. Bidding had initially been planned for December but is now expected in the first quarter of next year. Work has also begun on Hyderabad and Sukkur, targeted for the second quarter of 2027, while Lahore, Multan, Peshawar and Hazara are planned for the second half of 2027. The companies would be required to improve performance through smart metering, lower electricity losses, better recovery and uninterrupted supply.

An anti-terrorism court in Karachi on Tuesday sentenced two men to death for kidnapping for ransom two teenage brothers. The judge found Riaz Ahmed and Aijaz Ahmed guilty and sentenced them to death on two counts for kidnapping and on the terrorism charge. Prosecutors said that in October 2023 the men lured Rehan, 18, and Rizwan, 14, with the promise of jobs at a spices factory in Sukkur, then took them to the riverine area and demanded six million rupees in ransom. After a month of negotiations the men agreed to 500,000 rupees and moved the brothers to a house in Karachi, where police rescued them in a raid after a shoot-out and arrested the two men.

کراچی کی انسداد دہشت گردی عدالت نے منگل کو دو نوجوان بھائیوں کو تاوان کے لیے اغوا کرنے کے مقدمے میں دو مجرموں کو سزائے موت سنا دی۔ جج نے ریاض احمد اور اعجاز احمد کو اغوا کے دو الزامات اور دہشت گردی کے الزام میں مجرم قرار دیا۔ استغاثہ کے مطابق اکتوبر 2023 میں ان افراد نے 18 سالہ ریحان اور 14 سالہ رضوان کو سکھر میں مصالحہ فیکٹری میں ملازمت کا جھانسہ دے کر کچے کے علاقے میں لے جا کر 60 لاکھ روپے تاوان مانگا تھا۔ ایک ماہ کی بات چیت کے بعد وہ پانچ لاکھ روپے پر راضی ہوئے اور بھائیوں کو کراچی کے ایک گھر میں منتقل کیا، جہاں پولیس نے فائرنگ کے بعد چھاپہ مار کر انہیں بازیاب کرایا اور دونوں کو گرفتار کر لیا۔
