Ireland's two-time Olympian Ciara Mageean has died aged 34 after a battle with stage four bowel cancer. A statement on her social media said she died at 6:30am on Sunday surrounded by her loved ones. Mageean won the European 1500 metres title in Rome in 2024, represented Ireland at the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Olympics, and missed the Paris 2024 Games with an Achilles injury. She had married last month, and Athletics Ireland said it was deeply saddened by her passing.

Spain has become the 15th member of the Tallinn Mechanism, the international coalition that coordinates civilian cyber support for Ukraine, at its semi-annual meeting in Rome. The group confirmed that more than 32 million euros has been allocated in 2026 to strengthen Ukraine's critical digital infrastructure, including repairs to systems damaged by cyberattacks. Japan received observer status at the meeting, and eight countries took part for the first time. Estonia added a further 700,000 euros for restoration projects, while Italy, which holds the rotating chair, will finish its term in December, with Finland and Norway set to lead next.

Spain's Renfe train drivers are on a 24-hour strike on Thursday, 29 October, disrupting high-speed, regional and airport rail services, with minimum service levels of about 73 percent for high-speed and long-distance trains and 65 percent for medium-distance trains. The drivers' union cites railway safety, working conditions and unfulfilled commitments. Italy follows on Friday, 30 October, with a nationwide general strike that will hit trains, flights, buses, trams, taxis, ports and schools, and the US Embassy in Rome has warned travellers to allow extra time and avoid demonstrations.
